St1 opens its first fuel-free service station

A new milestone in the Nordic energy transition was reached today as St1 officially opened the completely transformed Marienlyst station in Oslo – now operating without any petrol or diesel pumps. The station, in continuous operation since 1960, is the first in Norway – and possibly the entire Nordic region – to be fully rebuilt for electric mobility, offering only EV charging, a car wash, and a convenience store.
“This upgraded station at Marienlyst is a great example of how we can combine environmentally friendly development with practical solutions. As the electric vehicle capital, Oslo needs more initiatives like this – helping to reduce emissions while also making everyday life easier for residents and businesses,” said Anne Lindboe, Mayor of Oslo, who officially opened the station on Thursday morning.
A historic site, redesigned for the future
When Marienlyst first opened in 1960, Norway had just over 200,000 private cars on the road. Today, that number is closer to 3 million – with nearly 30% of all cars being fully electric. In a country that leads the world in EV adoption, traditional petrol stations are evolving to meet a new reality.
“In recent years, we’ve replaced many fuel pumps at our St1 stations across Norway with fast chargers. But this is the first time we’ve removed them all,” said Anita Sørlundsengen, Retail Director at St1 Norway. “What’s left is a modern charging hub, along with a car wash and a convenience store. We wouldn’t have made this change unless we truly believed in it.”
The station is located in Oslo’s Majorstuen district, an area with a high density of electric vehicles and taxi traffic. The transformation was triggered by planned roadworks by the City of Oslo, which reduced available driveways at the site. Rather than reconfigure for fuel, St1 chose to build for the future.
An energy company in transition
St1 already offers fast charging at 90 locations in Norway and continues to expand its charging network across the Nordic region. The company is investing significantly in the energy transition – including electric mobility, biogas, sustainable fuels, and renewable energy solutions.
“St1 is not a traditional energy company,” said Sørlundsengen. “We continue to operate in today’s energy system while investing in tomorrow’s.”
