Variety, responsibility and problem solving: Johnny Hult's energy transition journey

As a maintenance technician at St1’s refinery, Johnny has a role that combines hands-on work and planning. The work ranges from daily maintenance to larger efforts during shutdowns, where several tasks need to be coordinated to ensure the facility keeps running as it should over time.
“I work with the whole process, from planning to finished work. It’s the variety that makes the job so rewarding,” says Johnny.
Workdays can look very different depending on the needs of the facility, which requires flexibility and problem-solving skills. Being able to switch between different types of tasks while keeping the big picture in mind is an important part of the role.
For Johnny, the feeling of contributing to the whole is a strong driving force, as is the collaboration with colleagues in different parts of the business.
“It’s an inspiring job with really good colleagues, and safety is always on our minds in everything we do.”
It was also the work environment and sense of community that made him want to stay at the refinery early on.
“The community and the cooperation between departments work really well. That’s what made me stick around here.”
A central part of the work is staying one step ahead: spotting and managing risks before they lead to problems in operations.
“We are constantly working to minimize risks and prevent leaks. It’s an important part of our responsibility.”
Through ongoing maintenance and the improvements carried out, Johnny helps ensure safe and reliable operations while the facility develops over time.
Development is also a natural part of everyday work, where new situations and assignments constantly offer the chance to build on one’s skills.
“Every day brings something new, and that keeps you developing all the time.”
