From finance and engineering to sustainable fuels: Haakon’s energy transition journey

At 27, Haakon has already worked in pricing, finance and regulatory reporting at St1 in Norway. What’s behind his story? A good tip from a friend, a curious mind, and managers who let him hold the wheel.
Haakon works as Sustainable Fuels Reporting Specialist in Energy, Trade and Logistics, based in Oslo. He is responsible for reporting St1 Norway’s yearly turnover of sustainable fuels to Norwegian Environment Agency.
“Within the scope of my role is close collaboration with NEOT and process development to ensure that we deliver accurate data for mandate reporting efficiently”, Haakon explains. NEOT is St1’s jointly owned fuel sourcing and logistics company, connecting the refinery and the global fuel market with the Nordic supply network.
Curiosity opened the door to energy
Some people pick one field and stick with it. Haakon picked two.
“Being a bit curious by nature, I ended up graduating in two different fields. I first did a bachelor’s degree in finance. Then, I wanted to explore technology, so I applied to study Electrical engineering at NTNU, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology”, Haakon says.
The combination of knowledge in markets, energy and technology ultimately made St1 a very good fit for him.
The connection to St1 came through a fellow student who was working part-time in pricing and spoke highly of St1, and encouraged Haakon to apply for an open position.
“To this day, I’m still happy he did,” Haakon says.
Growing through different sides of the business
Haakon joined St1 during the Christmas holidays of 2020 as a part-time pricing operator at the Retail Pricedesk in Oslo. Starting in the middle of the global pandemic made for an unusual introduction to working life, but it also showed him something important about the company.
“I got to see firsthand that we are able to adapt to an ever-changing operating environment.”
After graduating, he spotted an opening in the finance unit: a controller position covering St1’s Bulk and Marine business in Norway. Curious to learn more about the B2B side of the company, Haakon applied.
It became his first full-time role and introduced him to another part of St1’s business.
“It taught me a lot. It also showed me that this company does a lot of impressive business.”
Now, Haakon is building new expertise within sustainable fuels reporting.
“As of September, I’m working full speed on Norwegian biofuel mandate-related tasks, and I’m once again learning a lot!”
Trusted to take the wheel
What has helped Haakon grow most is being given the freedom to approach his work in his own way, while taking ownership of the outcome.
“Being encouraged and trusted to deliver work in the way I see fit. Essentially, being allowed to hold the wheel.”
That trust has allowed Haakon to move between different roles and parts of the business, building an understanding of St1 from retail pricing to B2B, finance and sustainable fuels.
Agility, responsibility and a good laugh
The energy industry is constantly changing, shaped by new policies and a shifting business environment.
“We make a real effort to act responsibly and see the commercial opportunities in challenges. That proven agility is impressive to me.”
But life at St1 is not only about the work itself. Haakon describes colleagues as having a good combination of commitment to their work and a good sense of humour.
“I particularly like that in an office made up of many different generations, a good laugh seems to be a common denominator among us all.”
“Agile, exciting, curious”. That’s how Haakon would describe St1 in just three words.
And his favourite employee benefit? That one is easy.
“The social group. They always deliver memorable events!”
