ASKO is aiming for a fully fossil-free transport fleet, powered by electricity and biogas. Together with partners such as St1, the company is working to cut emissions and accelerate the energy transition.

St1 is systematically working to make the fuels of the future more sustainable. The company’s goal is to offer customers low-emission alternatives to fossil fuels — today and in the years ahead. This work is carried out in close collaboration with partners such as ASKO, which is taking a leading role in their transition to fossil-free heavy transport.

ASKO leads the way

ASKO is Norway’s largest grocery wholesaler and a part of NorgesGruppen. They have 4500 employees and is one of the largest Norwegian transport companies with more than 700 trucks on the roads, every day.

ASKO’s ambition is to operate an entirely fossil-free transport fleet. To achieve this, the company is investing in electric vehicles and biogas.

“Our goal is clear. For us, fossil-free transport means using only electric vehicles and biogas. These are the technologies we are introducing to replace our old diesel trucks,” says Marius Råstad, Logistics Manager for Outbound Transport at ASKO.

A climate and environmental strategy that drives innovation

ASKO’s decisions on transport are closely linked to the company’s overall climate and environmental ambitions.

“We have worked toward fossil-free transport for many years. Our ambitions and climate targets guide our technology choices and ensure that we are heading in the right direction,” Råstad explains.

Collaboration as a key to progress

The transition to fossil-free transport for ASKO comes with challenges and strong partnerships are essential.

“We work closely with our partners, and we find solutions together. Close cooperation contributes to us maintain momentum toward our goal,” says Råstad.

Since introducing its first electric truck in 2016, ASKO has seen rapid progress in its electrification journey.

“The electric vehicles we receive today offer a completely different level of stability and quality compared to 2016. The technology has advanced significantly, and we are continuously expanding our fleet of electric trucks,” he says.

Building charging infrastructure for heavy transport

A smooth transition to electric transport depends on the development of reliable charging infrastructure. ASKO collaborates with St1, which is investing heavily in charging solutions for both passenger and heavy-duty vehicles, as well as in biogas for heavy transport.

“We would like to see faster progress in establishing charging stations for heavy vehicles in Norway. The demand is high, and development needs to accelerate,” Råstad emphasizes.

For St1, this is a strategic priority. The company highlights heavy transport as a sector where electrification and low-emission fuels will play a decisive role in road transport energy transition.

Stronger together

Through the development of charging solutions for heavy vehicles and refueling points for biogas, St1 aims to build strong partnerships with companies such as ASKO and contribute to reducing emissions across the transport sector.

“We gain valuable insight from working with ASKO. They are ahead of the curve in their industry and drive the adoption of fossil-free alternatives in line with their ambitions. This creates strong opportunities to identify solutions that truly work in the energy transition,” says Alexander Andersen, Sales Manager B2B at St1 Norway.

He also highlights the importance of ambitious customers: “It’s crucial for us to work with large and forward-leaning customers. Together we can help move the market in the right direction and influence policy decisions, ensuring that the transport sector continues its transition toward low-emission alternatives,” Andersen adds.

The road ahead to 2030

ASKO’s goal of achieving 100 percent fossil-free transport demonstrates that the transition to low emission alternatives is within reach — given clear ambitions, measurable goals, a long-term strategy, and strong collaboration. For St1, the partnership with ASKO is a source of inspiration to continue pursuing its vision to be the leading producer and seller of CO₂-aware energy.
