A Bright Milestone: St1 Switches On Its First Solar Park at Risholmen

St1 has officially launched its very first solar park near the St1 Refinery in Gothenburg, Sweden. Since May, the Risholmen facility has been delivering renewable energy to the grid – marking an important step towards the company’s vision to be the leading producer and seller of CO₂-aware energy.
The solar park comprises 15,777 solar panels that convert solar energy into electricity. With an estimated annual production of 8.5 GWh, the park can provide enough electricity to power over 1,500 single-family homes or over 4,000 apartments annually. In total, around 80,000 working hours were invested in bringing the project to life.
Solar energy plays a vital role in the transition toward carbon-neutral energy systems. It is clean, abundant, and renewable — producing electricity without direct emissions of greenhouse gases. By investing in solar, St1 is not only contributing to reducing dependence on fossil fuels but also ensuring greater energy diversification and resilience for the future.
“We are proud to see our first solar park successfully operational,” says Helén Ljungqvist, Managing Director at St1 Refinery. “It marks an important milestone in the shift towards more sustainable energy and in supporting St1’s broader vision to become a leading producer and seller of CO₂-aware energy.”
The electricity generated at Risholmen is sold on the commercial power market. The location, a peninsula at the inlet to Gothenburg, was carefully chosen due to its favorable solar conditions created by the open landscape and proximity to the sea. This project represents an important milestone in St1’s long-term vision of becoming a leading producer and seller of CO₂-aware energy.
“This solar park is more than just a technical accomplishment; it marks an important step forward in our journey to lead the energy transition. It reflects the dedication and hard work of everyone involved in bringing this project to life.” says Lars Olausson, Project Manager at St1.
