Climate & nature
Nature and biodiversity
Nature and biodiversity are essential for the functioning of energy systems and the availability of natural resources. St1 recognises that its activities, as well as those across its value chain, have impacts on biodiversity and ecosystems.
Understanding and mitigating our impacts on nature
St1 is taking the next steps in strengthening its approach to biodiversity and ecosystems, with a focus on developing initial nature-related targets. To support this, St1 is advancing its understanding of impacts through a planned biodiversity footprint calculation. This work will help identify where action matters most and support more informed decision-making across the business. Together, these efforts aim to build a stronger foundation for integrating nature considerations into future development and the ongoing energy transition.
Environmental responsibility & resource management
At St1, environmental monitoring is an integral part of our refinery's environmental permits, ensuring compliance with regulations and minimizing ecological impact. As part of our commitment to environmental stewardship, we take immediate action to mitigate and remediate any environmental damage in the event of an incident. Our Gothenburg refinery holds ISO 14001 certification, ensuring that our environmental management system meets globally recognised standards for sustainability, continuous improvement, and compliance.
Water stewardship – Optimizing water use, ensuring compliance with strict environmental standards.
Pollution prevention – Proactively managing emissions, spills, and industrial waste.
Air emissions:
Sulphur oxides (SOₓ): Produced during the combustion of sulfur-containing fuels.
Nitrogen oxides (NOₓ): Emitted from combustion processes.
Volatile organic Compounds (VOCs): Released during fuel storage and distribution.
Particulate matter (PM): Generated from various operational activities.
Oil and chemical spills
Sustainable operations – Implementing governance policies that reinforce our commitment to environmental protection.
