This year, the energy company St1 has significantly expanded its high-power charging network for electric vehicles. In Finland, the company has already opened more than 30 new high-power charging fields at its St1 and Shell stations. In addition, the company is building a comprehensive charging station network in Sweden and Norway. In total, St1 is investing about EUR 50 million in increasing its charging infrastructure in 2024, which will significantly increase charging opportunities for electric vehicles in St1's Nordic home market.
In Finland, the number of fully electric vehicles has rapidly increased; by the end of 2024, there will be over 110,000 of them. To respond to this development, St1 is expanding its St1 Charge network, which provides drivers of electric vehicles with an accessible, fast and reliable charging option.
"The St1 Charge high-power charging fields are designed to make the everyday life of electric vehicle drivers easier," says Juha Vanninen, Head of Retail at St1. "The stations are located in central locations at St1 and Shell stations with good transport connections. At our stations, we use state-of-the-art technology, and the HPC stations offer significantly higher charging speeds than traditional basic or high-power charging stations."
The total capacity of the high-power charging fields ranges from 600 kW to 1.2 MW. Thanks to the dynamic power distribution of the charging fields, several vehicles can be simultaneously charged, with the charging speed automatically distributed according to the vehicles' requirements. The maximum output of the charging stations is 400 kW, which enables rapid charging for all electric vehicles, including new plug-in hybrid models with a CCS2 connection.
The contactless payment options for charging electric vehicles include Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay. The payment services will be developed further and, in 2025, it will also be possible to pay for charging with the St1 app and the St1 corporate card.
St1's Nordic electricity charging network continues to grow
St1 is also building a charging network in Sweden and Norway. In Norway, the network already covers more than 70 stations and hundreds of charging points, while in Sweden, charging points have been opened at 15 stations this year.
"The experiences gained from other Nordic countries have been valuable and we will use them as we expand our operations in Finland", says Vanninen.
In 2024, St1 is investing about EUR 50 million to expand its charging network in Finland, Sweden and Norway. St1 has received support for its investments through the EU's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme, which promotes construction through co-financing in Finland and Sweden. In addition, the Energy Authority has financed the construction of charging points in Finland.
