St1 has established its first charging station for heavy vehicles in Oslo, Norway, where trucks, buses, and other vehicles up to 18 meters in length can recharge.
The energy transition in road transport is not only encouraging private customers to switch from traditional cars to electric vehicles (EVs), but it is also transforming the market for heavy vehicles toward more sustainable solutions, including battery-powered options.
Oslo Municipality has taken the lead in helping to establish a robust network for larger vehicles in Oslo, with part of this initiative being implemented at St1’s Shell station in Rommen.
“At St1, we have been investing in charging infrastructure for years, and we are pleased that Oslo Municipality is helping to expand options for larger vehicles. This is a growing market, but to ensure a balance between supply and demand, we need support to build an efficient network, as Oslo Municipality is striving to achieve,” says Jonas Bæk, Business Developer at St1.
St1 owns and operates all Shell stations in Norway and has already established passenger car charging at 90 of these stations. The company also investing in heavy vehicle charging at multiple locations, with the Rommen station being the first of its kind the company has opened in the Nordics. Several other locations are under development.
Enhancing the Charging Network
“It’s exciting to see the municipality's commitments realized as fully operational fast-charging stations. St1’s chargers for heavy transport will enhance infrastructure for electric trucks and buses along Oslo’s main northern roads. This is an important step toward achieving emission-free heavy transport,” says Margrethe Lunder, Climate Advisor at Oslo Municipality’s Climate Department.
For the truck charging points, three 400 kW fast chargers have been installed. Two of these feature load balancing between units to distribute power and ensure that each vehicle receives maximum charging efficiency during its session. The third charger is standalone and continuously delivers maximum power. It is designed for vehicles up to 18 meters long.
Upgraded Station
“We are very pleased to offer our customers a state-of-the-art system that provides fast and efficient charging. Regarding payment solutions, we are working to integrate the system with our business card. In the meantime, we accept standard debit and credit cards,” says Alexander Andersen, Sales Manager at St1.
All charging points at Shell Rommen meet universal design requirements, making the chargers accessible for wheelchair users. The Shell Rommen shop has also undergone a complete renovation, offering a more welcoming atmosphere with additional seating for customers who wish to enjoy a meal and relax while charging their vehicles.
